I've seen them growing in mass, particularly surrounding abandoned or poorly maintained barn lots. Never realized they were consumable.

They are - sort of - consumable, if you really, really, really know what you're doing.
Read the above link first before you snack on 'em!

That said, there's for sure more people alive who've eaten them than people who've died from 'em. If that's any consolation.
