I'm looking for a Hawken .50cal pistol- kit or finished.

If you've got any other black powder firearms (especially unfinished kits) I might be interested in them too. Even if the gun is not working I'm interested as this is practice gunsmithing- no plans to blow myself up, I can test them safely and have experience with BP guns.

Baja,

Your post "doesn't compute". All BP arms up to cannons (including those in kit form) can be bought without any paperwork, or any registration, even through the US Mail.

What am I missing?

I could be wrong, but I think he just wants to get a deal on 'em, Yeronner.

Yep- just looking for unloved and unwanted BP guns that anyone might have lurking in the back of their closets, garages, etc. #mrgreen

I watch the trader papers here too, but everyone seems to think their brass framed CVA guns are worth the same as actual Colts. #shakehead

A Question: I've been looking in the Cabelas catalog at a 1858 New Army Stainless .44. Is this a good thing, or would I be wasting my money?

Thanks

For the price you ought to try to find a Ruger Old Army. Stainless is great if you aren't going for authenticity as it's easier to clean. You could always Duracoat it if you wanted it to be a different color.

I own two stainless black powder guns. One is my beloved Kahnke M82 single shot hunting pistol that has a scope mounted on one barrel and an aimpoint mounted on another barrel along with fiber optic sights on the third barrel.

The other is a Ruger Old Army that is a thing of beauty. I love stainless guns.

Man I'm jealous Judge- the short barrel model with the fixed sights wasn't out when I bought mine. That's what I really want though- trade ya. #mrgreen

Have you got the R&D cylinder for it?

GW:

Naw, Pard... the ROAs 're too hell-fer-stout ta make good bobby-que guns. I reckon it is purty 'nuff though. #wink

Baja:

Yessir, I do indeed.

Ol' Reckless has an ROA jis like mine except his'n is a rusty old blued model and wears a nice rusty speckled drop-in R&D cylinder. #rolleyes

Jis kiddin' Reckless. #wink

The truth is, one time we spent a weekend shooting the be-stuffin's outta those two pistols and decided that while they might not be our #1 "must-have" pistols, we'd fer dang sure be the poorer for not having them.

I think we both highly recommend them. At least, I know I do.
