| Just put new blades and knives in my straw chopper, 9610 john deere combine. There are 36 blades and 35 knives. I don't know if these would work for knife blades but they have to be good metal as they have chopped the straw on well over 50,000 acre of wheat, sunflowers, peas and a variety of crops. Each blade measures 8 1/2" x 1 3/4" x 3/16 thick with a hole on one end that takes up about an inch. the knives measure 7 1/2" x 2" or less because of wear by 1/16" thick and also have a hole on one end. If anyone could use any or all they are free just need some postage. Should be able to get quite a bit in post office flat rate box. |

That is interesting indeed! I'd think that those "blades" would be about the right size to use as a knife blank. Any input on the steel quality GW?? I've been wanting to try my hand at fabricating a blade or two.... _________________ DCMG #3

Combine blades are usually made of 65Mn steel, closest equivalent would be 1065 steel. Usually heat treated to 48-58 Rockwell hardness.
If I had some place to set up my forge, (currently stored at my dad's house in NM) I'd probably take all you have. I can ask a couple guys I know, that have forges up and running, if they want them
BTW, I believe the limit for flat rate is around 70 lbs.. _________________ OIF 2005-2006

1065 is a good forgiving steel. Should be fairly easy to heat treat with a torch, and would make you a excellent knife. _________________ Su Amigo, Grey Wolf |

I bet even someone as inept as I could make a knife of some sorts out of that. _________________ Hunger is the best sauce. |
