Yesterday afternoon. Hank Dodge, Miz Katie, and young Konrad took me to the local Gem and Mineral Show. It was sizeable: it filled the largest exposition hall at the fairgrounds.
What an education! All of the exhibitors were more than willing to talk shop and I learned a bunch - not just about the gems and minerals but what to do with them once you've found them and how to acquire the tooling to accomplish that end.
The 1881 Ranch is literally full of prospecting possibilities. I suspect some of that to occur this summer
In all it was great fun, but I gotta tellya, another facet of the show was a pure delight to watch:
Konrad showed up wearing his Cub Scout uniform (as required) because an entire section of the show was set aside for Scouts of all kinds to earn badge points on geology and mineraology according to their skill levels.
Konrad signed in and gave the lady his pack number and rank (Wolf), was issued a paper "Quiz" and pencil and directed to from one display to another where he read and observed the exhibit and then answered the related questions on the Quiz.
The Quiz was then turned in to a "counselor" who went over it with him and when that was satisfied, he had Konrad select a small cloth pouch (like a miner's poke) and identify the various rocks in the bag. And the poke and its contents were Konrad's to keep.
I was impressed! both at the extent of what the kids were being presented and particularly by Konrad. He's a sharp young man.
... and it sure took this old man's "remembery" back a lotta years.
Thanks, Hank and Katie!

That sounds like a great time! Good for all of you! And Konrad 'specially! _________________ "A prisoner of war is a man who tries to kill you and fails, and then asks you not to kill him." -Winston Churchill
