Hummm, I'm confused. Did Judge post or not post here? I had a question to ask. Kinda a "But whyyyyyyyy not daddy?" thing.

Yes, I did Nancy. I deleted the post because I only "thought" we (Orion, Maha, and me) had agreed that links to blogs were a "no no".
There's a few problems with allowing such, yet the fact remains that occasionally such a link is indeed appropriate and beneficial (this illustration being one of them).
My virus protector/program tells me that blogs are incredibly virus laden. Linking to them is simply begging for computer problems. About half the time I do so, a pop-up tells me my protector has blocked "this or that trojan or tracking cookie" so I avoid blogs like the plague.
Then, they rarely contribut to the general discourse here at the CampFire (but some DO contribute).
Everyone screamed bloody murder when the "411 person" elected to display his google-fu as Chip labeled it and posted nothing but hundreds of links, most of which were out dated, or long since been deliberated by members here and yet he had ZERO ability or desire to discuss the content of them. The point being posting links for the lack of having anyting to say or discuss or otherwise contribute to the discourse here, is NOT contributing anything to the board. Your posts, replies, discussions are.
The CampFire is about the exchange of various and often differing ideas, viewpoints and experiences. Links are 100% ancilliary to such posings.
Does that make sense?
Regardless, now that Conservative's post is completely hijacked (my apologies, Con...) there's no reason why the subject of links to blogs cannot be discussed openly and freely. _________________ OJC - DCMG #1

OK, I can understand that even if part of it does sound a little frugalish. But let's be honest a whooooole lot of the enjoyable part of the Campfire, at lest for me, is just pure entertainment.
I'm sure not suggest that Dan cut it out with the funny stuff.
Is there something to look for in a blog link to let one know there is a problem with it? I really enjoy most of them. If I see a pop-up that says there is a problem of course I wouldn't post a link here.
"Ancilliary" There you go using those big words again. Let's see where did I put ol' Webster? _________________ Start: 1/26 - 226

Copied over from the hijacked thread.
Personally I have no problem with members linking to a blog that contains information or something of general interest as long as it isn't the poster's own blog. For instance, the link to the video Conservative posted isn't on his own blog so I have no problems with it.
Now, to clarify my stand on folks linking to their own blogs:
IMO, if a CampFire denizon wants to impart their wisdom/information/pictures/story/whatever from their own personal blog, then they should make the effort to copy and paste that which they wish to share in a thread/post on the CampFire.
I believe that just linking to their own personal blogs takes away from the CampFire.
Posting the article in its entirety adds both to the CampFire and to the enjoyment of our members.
Now again, I have to state that this is regarding personal blogs of our members, not blogs by non-CampFire members.
FWIW I have never had a problem with viruses (virii?) or trojans etc. from reading blogs.
I hope this makes some sense. _________________ Orion

Nope, I agree with you Nancy:
The CampFire is FUN and it should be.
As well The Comical Sidekick Union Local #1881 won't allow much tamperin' with Reckless' extreme lowbrow brand of humor which is why I haftya keep boxin' 'is ears ta keep 'im on the straight and narrow
Yeah, at Maha's and Don's suggestion/request I wrote some basic CampFire "rules" in 2008 but I never posted them because I HATE RULES and because as it was, things seemed managable withiout them. To a degree, I still believe that.
However, we still get 411 type posters and others who delight in posting stuff that is downright offensive or in extremely poor taste.
I am NOT the guardian of taste or manners or civility but I do expect a degree of restraint and consideration for other folks point of view: a picture of a morbidly obese woman photoshopped to show her sagging belly and navel exposed beneath the hem of her dress is not funny. Its demeaning to both the poster and to its intended audience and in just plain poor taste. I expect better/more from the CampFire membership.
The fact is we cannot legislate morality, good taste, or "class" but we - all of us - have a right to expect some degree of it especially here at the CampFire.
When people go a bit too far, I generally call them on it. Almost always, they get the hint and that's the end of it. They've learned there is a boundry (artificial or not) and rarely does the problem occur again.
Occasionally someone will keep pushing just to see how far he can push. Sadly, no one "wins" in those cases. We all loose. _________________ OJC - DCMG #1

Riiiiight.
The photo probably sounded like a good idea at the time kinda thing. It did not offend me but may have other ladies here. It was not something I would want haning on my wall but.......I try not to impose my delicate taste ffffffffttttt on others. And I do appreciate your views about respecting women. You are ever the gentleman. Well most of the time.
And not that it matters but the photo very well could have NOT been Photoshoped. We have a lady here in Mesquite that I see in Wal Mart every now and then in one of those handi capped scooters. Let me tell you I have seen her belly button, just like the one in the photo, almost touching the floor of the scotter. I really felt sorry for her until I saw what was in her basket. _________________ Start: 1/26 - 226

You can see people like that, both men and women, any day at the local WalMart. No need for photoshop.
We know, of course, that many of these folks are poor and don't know any better, have a poor diet, etc.
However, I also know a very fine doctor who is so big (width-wise) that she has trouble getting close enough to a hospital bed to examine a patient. I can't imagine that she doesn't know how harmful that is.
I'm sure that all kinds of medical treatments are readily available to her, probably at no cost.
I have to figure that it's a conscious choice people have made -
they'd rather eat well now and die young, than live a long life. |
