I HATE hotels!! That was one of the biggest gripes I had about working on the road. I really disliked having to stay in cheap hotels five nights a week ( not to mention sharing that room with an annoying co-worker ). I always tried to get a room where I could park the truck right outside the door. I'd go out of my way to make sure that was the case. One place we stayed at for quite some time was really bad, but it was our only option. Needless to say, a SureFire and my 1911 travels with me. Nice to have at 3AM when an irate someone is pounding on the door looking for his wife/girlfriend/whatever....

Depending on how many people you have to carry, a dually with a slide in would be my choice if you want versatility. You can find lots of nice duallys right now, a slide in, while more cramped, will have everything you need and you can remove it while not needed and use the truck.

Hanging with a bit of a hippy crowd as I do on occasion and also having been a concert junkie (including the Dead when Jerry was sill kicking) I've seen some very nice school bus conversions, but most buses need the roof lifted in order to provide proper headroom. Even with the governors removed, they generally aren't very fast though. The nicest are the diesel pusher buses that folks convert.

Personally I'm looking for an E350 van right now to convert to a camper.

As much as I love military vehicles, they suck for longer distances. A pair of noise canceling headphones is almost a must. Even when you insulate the cab they are loud and still need heat and air upgrades. Changing a tire on one is a bear too. It's definitely fun to cruise around town in a deuce and a half though- everyone looks. #smile

I agree with Baja. A dually with a slide in camper is the way to go.
Way more versatility.

If you do go the RV route make sure you get a diesel.
I had a '79 Class C on a Ford chassis. That thing measured gas mileage in gallons per mile! #shakehead

Ditto on the diesel. my 87MH gasser got 7-8mpg, my 97f350 power stroke gets around 18.

My Dodge Ram diesel typically gets 22 mpg on a trip and ~16 in town.

By "gee whiz" comparison, my Honda CRV has averaged 21.5 mpg overall since the day I bought it.

That is so true. Wish I had discovered the deuce magic when I was younger. And I thought my '75 Coupe De Ville was pretty neat...

A year ago I thought I was going to see a wreck. I pulled up to a stop sign at a busy intersection. As I waited for a chance to cross a young kid drove past on the other road. Mid intersection he noticed the deuce and stuck his head out the window and 5 seconds later he was head and shoulders out the window looking back at me as he went down the road at 50 mph... He turned around and came back for a second look.

there really has not been a big drop in rv prices here yet. too many greedy (not desperate enough yet)people wanting all their pennies back from their purchases. they are doing the same thing with houses too.

they assume if everybody keeps the price up they will all sell at full value. it will not happen that way. folks would buy brand new instead of buying slightly cheaper for a used unit.

i am still scouring the car trader sites and kijiji for deals. i can be picky for now. see what happens. there will not be any custum rv in my backyard this time around though. too many other things that need to get done first.

In other words, the economy up there doesn't suck anywhere near as much as the economy down here and people aren't willing to give things away for a fraction of what they've got tied up in them.

exactly manny. i knew years ago that the economy was going to tank and was waiting for it to happen so i could buy some of these toys off the other people that overspent on stuff. you know, quads, rv's , motorbikes, boats etc.

the economy is coming around again slowly but people will have to be patient. same as me looking for a good deal on stuff.

there have actually been lots of rv's that i think were honestly not worth the cost. they were run down and faded but the people still wanted lots of cash for them.

oh well, still have to hunt for the good deals.

I bought a camper trailer for my family in Phoenix back in November. I discovered that the rv prices were being held up by people loosing their homes and moving into campers and rv's. Larger junked out rv's were selling for three and four thousand dollars and there was nothing on the market that was decent for less than $7,000 USD so I bought a $7000 30' camper that was in very nice clean condition from a fellow that NEEDED $7000 to get out from under his payments. I couldn't afford the camper but my Mom made me an interest free loan for about half of the price. I'm half way to paying her back now. I plan on using the camper to house my family for most of 2010 and selling it when we are done with it. It was cheaper and more flexible than renting an apartment or house for the year.

so i found a 97 ford chassis motorhome(class c ) with a powerstroke engine, the 7.3 liter . it is selling for 12,500 cannuck bucks. i think we will go take a look on sunday and see what it looks and feels like.

i run diesels engines at work all the time so it is nothing too new. anything that i really should keep and eye out for?

thanks

Remember the camping season is ending, less buyers = less sales = less price.
