The fishing rod & reel I selected for my 15yr anniversary from the company arrived last night, and man is it SWEET!!!!! A Shimano Calcutta 200B reel & Shimano Crucial CRC-66 MH rod, both absolutely reeking of quality. About $350 worth of gear per some prices I saw on the internet, certainly a HUGE step up from my last $35 rod & reel.
Reading some reviews it sure sounds like a top notch versatile set up. Now to find someone to put some line on and teach me the basics so I'll be good to go this summer. Just holding it I can feel the tension easing and the relaxation slipping in.... _________________ "Adversity breeds toughness, and the tough succeed. And survive."

The Calcutta is a great reel. Spool it up, get a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce weight, tighten the back-lash drag to the point the weight will barely fall on free-spool and begin working on your timing. Start short range, and work out. I used a 5 gallon bucket as a target.
For long casts with heavy lures I use an over-hand cast.
90% of my casting was done side-arm with a wrist flip. The Calccuta will allow you to easily cast 1/4 oz lures once you get the hang of it. _________________ "The shallow-minded modern who has lost his rootage in the land assumes that he has already discovered what is important." Aldo Leopold |

Congratulations Manny!!
The world of baitcasting can be wonderous, but also a frustrating one if you're new to it.
A good tip while learning to master the cast...is to manually pull out enough line to equal your longest cast, then place a piece of electrical tape across the spool. That-a-way, your birdsnests will be limited to that amount of line.
Youtube has a slew of baistcaster trick & tips, enjoy! |
